ADMIRALS:
Everyone in the Coast Guard just received the following e-mail from our current Commandant, ADM Allen:
"I am pleased to announce that the President of the United States, upon recommendation from the Secretary of Homeland Security, has nominated VADM Robert J. Papp Jr. for appointment as the 24th Commandant of the United States Coast Guard, subject to confirmation by the U.S. Senate."
This is significant for me because then CAPT Papp was my first Commanding Officer when I served under him onboard the EAGLE ten years ago. He was always a politically minded man, and I remember joking with him that I thought he would make a great Commandant. I doubt that meant anything to him coming from a non-rate like me, but still, I'm proud to see my old Commanding Officer take charge as my boss once again.
AVATARS:
So Pepper, Kyn and I went to see Avatar in 3-D yesterday afternoon. I've got some seriously mixed feelings about this film, which I suppose play in to some of its unique qualities. I feel like I'm required to respect the movie, you know? Like, "See everything that we're doing? If you don't like this then you're not American!" or something like that. Don't get me wrong, I DO enjoy a great deal about the movie, I just don't like the feeling that I'm expected to.
Yet even with the breathtaking visuals and awe-inspiring world, I can't help feeling that the movie has been done before. I mean, when it comes right down to it, there are more than a dozen movies that tell essentially the same story, but this story takes a step back in favor of the uniquess of how it is told.
I experienced moments of true emotion, both happy and sad. There were moments of sillyness, both intentional and not. And there were moments of amazement, both at the beauty of the world, and the absurdity of the script.
It was a fun, enjoyable movie, and one I hope to see again. (And next time Zoe Saldana and Michelle Rodriguez are in a movie together, I want to see them acting with each other. Because that will be awesome.)
ASSHOLES:
Upon returning from seeing Avatar last night I found that a package had been left on our front doorstep. While unattended parcels at the door are not uncommon, this particular box was large and labeled head to toe with DELL insignias and "Careful-Electronics" warnings. It was the new laptop computer that Pepper's mom had bought her, and it was sitting on our porch for possibly three hours. This goes down as a "NOT COOL" in my book.
OH MY!
The days before Christmas are murder for me. I'm generally reserved regarding my curiosity about my own presents. I am anxious, however, to see the reactions of the people I got presents for. :p
